Havasupai (Havasu Falls) permits: dates & how to apply
Last verified .
Before you apply
- Book only through the Tribe's own system. The Tribe's terms say everyone entering for tourism must have a valid permit bought before arrival through its official booking system, and that "Using third party, resold, or transferred permits is strictly prohibited and not valid" (Havasupai Reservations: terms).
- Plan around a fixed trip length. "All Bookings are 4 Days / 3 Nights." Campground bookings can include up to 12 permits (people) per booking (Havasupai Reservations: FAQs).
- Count the kids correctly. Children 6 years old and younger don't need a paid permit and are admitted free with a valid permit holder. Children 7 and older need a paid permit. The Tribe also says bringing young children "is NOT recommended" (FAQs).
- Name your alternates when you book. A booking is only valid if the trip leader or one of the two Potential Alternate Trip Leaders (PATLs) listed at booking checks in with valid photo ID. "PATLs cannot be named or changed after a booking is made" (FAQs).
- Be sure of your dates before you pay. Bookings are paid in full at the time of booking. Cancelling at least 90 days before the start date gets a 50% refund (excluding any early access fee); within 90 days there's no refund (FAQs).
Common mistakes
- Skipping check-in. Permit check-in is at Grand Canyon Caverns & Inn. The trip leader must check in on the permit start date or one day before with valid photo ID. "Failure to do so cancels the booking with no refunds" (Havasupai Reservations).
- Bringing a pet. "Pets, service animals, and privately owned horses are not allowed anywhere on the Havasupai Reservation" (FAQs).
- Planning to sleep at the trailhead. "Camping is NOT permitted at Hilltop, including no sleeping in your vehicle" (Havasupai Reservations).
- Buying or selling a permit secondhand. "The Tribe strictly prohibits the resale or transfer of permits" (Havasupai Tribe).
What changed this year
TBA. As of Oct 15, 2026, the Tribe hasn't announced next year's on-sale date or prices. Check Havasupai Tribe.
Tips
- Know the distances. From Hualapai Hilltop it's an 8-mile hike to Supai Village, and the campground is another 2 miles on the main trail (Havasupai Reservations).
- Fill up before Indian Road 18. The Tribe says the closest gas stations are nearly 70 – 90 miles from the trailhead and to have enough fuel for at least 200 miles of driving before starting down the road (FAQs).
- Don't count on a signal. The Tribe says not to expect WIFI or cellular reception during your visit, including at the campground and lodge (FAQs).
- Plan for no medical help nearby. There are no public medical and health facilities in Supai Village, and the Tribe says getting treatment or transport after an injury "may take many hours or even days" (FAQs).
- Respect flash-flood warnings. The Tribe says the summer monsoon season (usually July through September) brings a higher chance of rain and flash flooding. "Do NOT hike past the top of Mooney Falls or enter narrow parts of the canyon when it is raining or flooding" (FAQs).
- Check the weather yourself. This page has no forecast link: we haven't found an official coordinate for the canyon from the Tribe, and we won't guess one. The Tribe's FAQ says peak-season temperatures (May-September) "can soar to well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit" (FAQs).
